Reveal a secret about XMRV and the Whittemore Peterson Institute Hey,I'm the new one here, and noticed more guys are noticing some discussion about XMRV and chronic fatigue syndrome. I would like to talk a little about it. I am a CFS patient, and have volunteered to take part in a new XMRV study, of UK CFS patients by the Whittemore Peterson Institute. The WPI have made it clear that they believe that the other labs who haven't found XMRV in CFS patients weren't following the same protocol as used by the WPI, and so are keen to test UK patients for themselves. I was watched every minutes in the Computer Monitor , that feeling was awful, you never wanna try this. I'm not invested one way or the other in whether XMRV plays a part in or causes CFS, or whether the WPI have got it right or wrong - I've been ill for many years and have seen other theories and hypotheses about CFS come and go. I volunteered to take part in the study as I thought it would be a useful thing to do, and of course I admit I'm curious about XMRV. However, unlike many of the other study participants (it seems that most are overjoyed about the study), I do have concerns about the way the study is being conducted. My main concern is that as a study participant, I could end up being told that I have, what Judy Mikovits calls, a "potentially deadly" retrovirus, for which there is no safe or proven treatment. No one is offering guidance or counseling on how study participants would cope with such news. I don't know whether the study has been past an ethics committee. And worst of all, if I was told i have XMRV, I don't even know whether the diagnosis would be reliable. I do know that the study will test each blood sample at both the WPI and a second independent lab (but I don't know where or which lab), but I understand that there are questions about how reliable the WPI's findings are. So it's a potentially very confusing and distressing situation for CFS patients taking part in the study - if you get an XMRV positive result, how can you know it's reliable, and what will it mean? I just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about this. I could still pull out of the study at this stage if you guys care about this and i'd like to, as i also wanna more poeple know this matter clearly.
